The Pafuri area is a stunning and varied place, from waterfalls to game parks to colourful koppies and the worlds biggest Baobab. Pafuri hides between the borders of Zimbabwe and Mozambique, the village is situated on the fence line of the Kruger National Park and the Mutale river. A truly gorgeous area.
During the summer it can get very hot but the winters are the best, cool in the morning and warm in the afternoon. Game viewing is best at this time, so is walking about. Walking around is one of the great pleasures of the area, it is safe, though you may get a group of kids following you, but where in Africa doesn't that happen. The land is still all tribal and so is controlled by the local headman but ultimately the local chief has the final say.
The village of Bennde-Mutale is quite large with about 120 homesteads, the predominant trees in the area are Mopane, Marula and Baobabs, birds abound in the local area and occasionally at night you can hear the call of the hyena and in winter the jackal and most night’s bush babies. The night sky is amazing as there is little to no light pollution.
Further afield, well 500 metres, there is the Pafuri gate of the world famous Kruger National Park. The northern sections of the Kruger is one of the most stunning yet least visited. Many of the routes run along either the Luvhuvhu or the Limpopo rivers. Closer by, yet still in the Kruger is Mavhulani or the 'potholes' a great place you can walk around and sit in the waterfalls sometimes watching elephants in the distance. Some of the local koppies have old ruins on them, there are many caves in the vicinity as well as the largest Baobab in the world (60Km away) and plenty of places to go fishing even in a big game reserve where you can just relax and braai.
Venda and especially Pafuri can be an adventurers dream, it is still an unspoilt part of "Africa" within the borders South Africa.
